How to Do Long Division: A Step-by-Step Guide for Parents and Kids
You probably remember learning long division at school as a long stream of numbers running down the page, and looking back, you might wonder how you were able to keep track of everything. Your child probably finds it just as confusing.
Breaking it into a repeatable sequence can make the process easier for your child. An elementary math tutor can show them how it’s done so that they can master the pattern and work through a problem all the way through to the remainder.
Catch mistakes early
Long division can go wrong even when your child understands the basic method because a mistake in one line can carry into the next. If their final answer looks wrong, here are a few checks to find out where things went off course and help them correct it.
- Are they skipping a step? Maybe they remembered to divide and multiply but forgot to subtract or bring down the next number. Have them say the four steps as they work: Divide, Multiply, Subtract and Bring down. An elementary math tutor can also help them practice this routine until they don’t have to think twice about what comes next.
- Are their numbers lining up? Take a quick look at their columns. If the numbers start moving out of place, it’s very easy to subtract the wrong digits. Graph paper can make things easier because each number gets its own little box. You can also turn lined paper sideways and use the lines as guides.
- Did they forget a zero? Your child may need to write 0 in the quotient when the divisor doesn’t go into the current number. They can then bring down the next digit and continue. Leaving out that zero will change the final answer.
- Is multiplication or subtraction tripping them up? Even if your child understands the long division process just fine, they could still end up with the wrong answer because of a small multiplication or subtraction mistake. Practicing regularly can help them master these basic skills. With a stronger foundation in math, they can be more confident when doing long division.
