Step 1: Read the entire problem

Your child may be rushing through word problems without realizing it. They spot a few numbers and assume that they know what to do right away.

To solve this, encourage your child to read the entire problem before figuring out the answer. This helps them focus on understanding the situation first rather than worrying about the answer immediately.

Step 2: Identify all the important information

Ask your child to encircle or highlight the numbers that are relevant to the problem. From there, you can encourage them to look for keywords that provide clues about which mathematical operation to use.

For example, words such as ‘total’ and ‘combined’ often mean they need to add something. Meanwhile, terms like ‘difference’ may mean they need to do a subtraction. These steps can teach your child to separate useful information from extra details that may not affect the solution.

Step 3: Solve and check the answer

Once your child understands the question and has noted all the important information, they can start solving the problem.

Help them set up the equation based on the clues they found in the problem. Encourage them to pause and think about whether it makes sense within the story.

This quick logic check allows them to look for mistakes that might otherwise go unnoticed. If the answer doesn’t fit the situation described, it’s a sign that they should review their work before moving on.
