The Ideal SAT Timeline: When to Start Preparing, Take the Test, and Stay on Track

For many students, the summer before junior year is a good time to begin SAT prep classes in NJ. It gives your child enough time to prepare for a fall SAT exam and, ideally, reach their target score by December or February. After completing the test, your child can turn their full attention to AP or IB exams in the spring and focus on college applications during the summer and fall of senior year.
This schedule works well because your child will have usually completed enough coursework by their junior year to build a solid foundation in the subjects covered on the SAT and ACT. These include reading comprehension and grammar, as well as all relevant math skills. At the same time, it helps them avoid adding test prep stress to an already busy senior year.
Of course, your child’s needs may be different. Perhaps they need extra preparation time and benefit from starting earlier, or they may continue testing into senior year. As long as you have a clear plan and enroll at a good tutoring center in Edison, you can support your child’s goals and help them prepare at the right time.
Should your child start earlier?
Some students benefit from beginning test prep sooner. At PALS Learning Center, Piscataway, we often recommend starting SAT preparation in January of sophomore year for students aiming for a significant score increase. This allows your child to take their first official SAT by June and continue improving from there.
Your child may need to start earlier if they’re being recruited for sports. College coaches sometimes begin making recruitment offers as early as September of junior year. In those situations, they may need to start their SAT prep classes in NJ at the beginning of sophomore year and complete their first exam by winter. That schedule gives them enough time during spring and summer to improve their scores before recruiting opportunities begin.
