Edison Academy Magnet School is a selective, tuition-free public high school for Middlesex County, New Jersey residents. Eighth graders apply for a Grade 9 seat through an online application, school-record review, entrance exam and, for students who advance, an interview.
This page focuses only on admissions and entrance-exam preparation. For engineering pathways, curriculum, courses and student fit, visit our Edison Academy Magnet School Guide. To compare all six district schools, use the Middlesex County Magnet Schools Guide.
Dates and requirements can change. Before submitting anything, check the current cycle on the official Edison Academy admissions website.

Edison Academy Admissions Process: Step by Step
1. Create the application account
Begin through the official Middlesex County Magnet Schools admissions page. Use a parent email address that is checked regularly because assessment details and admissions updates are sent electronically.
2. Complete the application and academic record
The student and parent or guardian complete the online application. Parents submit:
- Complete Grade 7 report cards
- Grade 8 first-marking-period report card, if available by the deadline
Edison Academy advises families to save the application until the Grade 8 first-marking-period report card can be entered. If it is not available by the deadline, submit the application on time; the school can obtain the report card from the middle-school counselor.
After the entrance exam, Edison Academy provides instructions for the middle-school counselor to upload the remaining records, including:
- Grade 8 first-marking-period report card, if it was not previously available
- Standardized-test-score report
- Attendance record
- Discipline record
Check that the counselor’s information is correct, then follow the school’s document instructions. Duplicate records are unnecessary unless the school requests them.
3. Take the mandatory entrance exam
The Edison Academy entrance exam includes mathematics, English and essay writing. It is approximately three hours long. Calculators are not permitted, and walk-ins are not accepted. The school sends the location and instructions to the parent email in the application.

This is a limited collection of sample questions—not a complete practice test. Edison Academy states that it does not release additional test details.
If illness or an emergency prevents attendance, contact Edison Academy immediately. Its FAQ states that a make-up test may be offered at the administration’s discretion; it is not guaranteed.
4. Application and test-score review
Edison Academy reviews the submitted application and entrance-exam score to determine who advances to Phase 2. Grades and school records matter, but the entrance-exam score is a major factor in interview qualification.
A PALS observation: In our experience helping Middlesex County families through this process, the entrance exam can make a meaningful difference even for students with excellent grades. That is an observation from prior admissions cycles, not an official scoring formula. Edison Academy does not publish its weighting or an interview cutoff.
5. Interview and recommendation letter
Qualified students are invited to an interview and asked to submit a recommendation letter. An interview invitation means the student has advanced to Phase 2; it is not an offer of admission.
Students should be prepared to discuss their interest in engineering, learning habits, academic experiences and reasons for choosing Edison Academy. Responses should be honest and specific rather than memorized.
6. Admission decision or waiting list
Students who complete the interview phase may be offered admission, declined admission or placed on the waiting list. Edison Academy’s FAQ states that applications remain on file through the following school year in case a seat becomes available.
7. Requirements after acceptance
Accepted families must follow the enrollment instructions and deadlines in their offer. Students who completed Algebra I but have not completed Geometry must follow Edison Academy’s summer Geometry requirement before Grade 9 so they are prepared to begin Honors Algebra II.
Families should also confirm transportation with their home school district and complete any summer assignments issued by Edison Academy.
What Edison Academy Publishes—and Does Not Publish—About the Exam
The Edison Academy entrance exam is a school-specific admissions assessment, not a publicly released standardized test such as the SAT or ACT.
Edison Academy publishes the test sections and limited sample questions. It does not publish:
- A complete official practice test
- A detailed topic-by-topic blueprint
- A scoring guide or essay rubric
- Section weights
- A qualifying score or interview cutoff
- The complete formula used to make admissions decisions
Strong grades alone do not guarantee an interview or admission. Students are competing for approximately 44 seats. Based on information available to PALS from the most recent admissions cycle, approximately 500–600 students applied. Application volume can change annually.
The assessment can change from one year to the next. A former applicant’s recollection may be helpful context, but it is not an official description of the next test. Group-chat rumors, unofficial scoring claims and generic workbooks should not replace preparation in the underlying skills.
What Students Should Be Ready to Do
Edison Academy confirms mathematics, English and essay sections but does not publish a full blueprint. The areas below are a PALS readiness guide based on official information and experience from prior admissions cycles; they are not a guarantee that every topic or format will appear.
Mathematics preparation
Students should be able to apply middle-school mathematics accurately, reason through unfamiliar problems and work efficiently without a calculator. Preparation should include:
- Number sense and operations: Multi-step work with integers, fractions, decimals, percentages and order of operations
- Ratios and proportional reasoning: Rates, ratios, proportions, percent change and real-world relationships
- Pre-algebra and Algebra I: Expressions, equations, inequalities, variables and relationships between quantities
- Geometry and measurement: Angles, perimeter, area, surface area, volume and coordinate geometry
- Data analysis and patterns: Tables, graphs, comparisons, sequences and reasonable conclusions
- Mathematical reasoning: Selecting an efficient method, identifying relevant information and checking whether an answer is reasonable
- No-calculator fluency: Accurate arithmetic and algebraic work under timed conditions
Knowing a formula is only the starting point. The harder task is recognizing when to use it in an unfamiliar, multi-step problem.
Reading and language arts preparation
Students should be ready to read closely and make evidence-based decisions. The reading material may be a poem, literary passage, informational passage or another type of text. Preparation should include:
- Identifying central ideas, details, purpose, tone and text relationships
- Drawing inferences and supporting them with textual evidence
- Determining vocabulary meaning from context
- Interpreting a poem’s speaker, theme, imagery, figurative language and structure
- Recognizing correct grammar, sentence structure, usage and punctuation
- Evaluating organization, transitions, clarity and logical development
- Comparing ideas and distinguishing strong evidence from weak evidence
Essay-writing preparation
The essay may call for reasoning or persuasive writing. Since Edison Academy does not publish a rubric or guarantee one prompt type, students need a flexible writing process they can use with the task they receive.
Students should practice how to:
- Interpret the prompt and take a clear position
- Develop a logical claim or central idea
- Organize an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion
- Support reasoning with specific examples or evidence
- Address another perspective when appropriate
- Use effective transitions, precise language and varied sentences
- Maintain correct grammar, punctuation and spelling
- Reread and revise within the allotted time

Comparing Edison and Woodbridge Academy Tests
Both academies use selective admissions testing. Edison Academy tests mathematics, English and essay writing. Woodbridge Academy also tests middle-school science. Families considering Woodbridge should use the separate Woodbridge Academy Admissions Guide for its eligibility, records, science preparation and timeline.
How PALS Piscataway Approaches Preparation
PALS Piscataway does not claim access to confidential questions, an unpublished scoring formula or the upcoming test. We build preparation around:
- Edison Academy’s official admissions information and sample questions
- 17 years of experience supporting students and families in the Piscataway–Edison area
- Cumulative student and parent feedback from prior Middlesex County admissions cycles
- The mathematics, English, essay-writing, reasoning and time-management skills needed for a competitive timed assessment
- Ongoing review of changes announced by Edison Academy and Middlesex County Magnet Schools
What we see at PALS: Strong students sometimes arrive knowing the school curriculum but unaccustomed to explaining their reasoning, writing under time pressure or working without a calculator. Those are trainable skills. Preparation can improve readiness and confidence; Edison Academy alone makes admissions decisions.
